Great Content, No Readers

I started blogging a couple of years ago because I wanted a more casual place to explore my musings and learning but mostly I started blogging to have a conversation with readers – to create more of a community-give-and-take-learning-thing. That’s happening because of your amazing comments! Wow on your comments!

Yet I have this burning blogging question: how do you find other good blogs to read? I’ve found a few over the years that I love but mostly, I get lost and overwhelmed in my search. So when Chuck Westbrook twitted about promoting blogs that were interesting or well-written but nobody has ever heard of I, I thought, “I want to know about those blogs.”

Check out Chuck’s post about his simple way to discover under-appreciated blogs and help them reach the audience they deserve. Make a comment at his site if you to want to play, too.

    Hey Jen,

Here’s a list of blogs I enjoy reading, maybe you’ll find a couple that you’ll enjoy too! http://paceandkyeli.com/2008/10/22/i-like-blogs-do-you-like-blogs-too/

I always peruse the blogroll of blogs I read, and if there’s one I don’t recognize, I follow the link and check it out – then do the same thing on the new blog. So it’s almost like word of mouth, but I guess it’s word of blog… :)

Jen, you asked how do you find other interesting blogs to read, and oh my, how do you ever??? I find that I stumble upon a blog, and 9 times out of 10, that blogger has something called a “blogroll” (a list of other blogs in a column on their front page) or something like “blogs I read” or “my tribe” or “pondering” or whatever they want to call a list of blogs THEY frequent…and then boom, there I am, exploring those…at which point you find another one that resonates, and then they might link you to something else..

Well, shoot, now that all sounds very haphazard and troublesome. It IS haphazard in a way. I’ve never found any blogs by actually searching by type or content… Yet, I have at least 10-15 I read faithfully and more than that I check now and then that I’ve discovered from my regular group.

I found that once I find a blog I really like to read, if it has a ‘theme’ of sorts (arts, simple living, green/sustainability, parenting, politics, women’s issues), that blog tends to lead me to more of the same.

I very rarely find a blog of interest by using the ‘Next Blog’ button on blogspot. Inevitably I end up in a blog that’s written in another language or one that hasn’t been updated since 2006. (That sounds like the blog I started, ha ha!!!!)

I am going to check out the article you posted which sounds interesting, esp if you are searching for a certain type of blog. But I have to say, I am at a loss for finding the time to keep up with the ones I have found and love! There are many people out there who have such great ideas, who are inspiring (YOU INCLUDED!) and then there are the ones who make me laugh or think…

Blogs are cool. As someone who love-love-loved to read diaries and journals of famous people as a young girl, the world of blogging is right up my alley.

    Have a super day!

    Hi Jen,
I saw your comment on Chuck’s blog about you no longer being a “trackback virgin” — love it!! and I was wondering if by chance you could coach me on this since I wasn’t able to get my wordpress trackback to appear under Chuck’s trackbacks. Thanks!

    Hi,
Here are 3 of my favorites:

    http://www.parisbreakfast.com

    http://www.abrushwithcolor.blogspot.com

    http://www.tracyporter.com

The first 2 sites have newly painted watercolors to go with their writing.
There are inspirational quotes and often referrals to other sites.
Tracy Porter has everything from home to fashion to videos on her blogs.

    Enjoy!

Jen, have you tried “blog catalog”? You can search any topic you want and link to fantastic blogs. One of my favorites:
    http://nakedineden.com/nakedinedenblog/
by Robin Easton, who is an author, environmentalist, world traveler, etc.
