My holiday intentions:
Exercise everyday
Make cookies or sesame salt for the doctors and nurses that helped my family this year
Remember it is not about survival or being alone it is about connection
And that, my dears, is that.
Off to teach a wonderful retreat with Ms. Molly Gordon… hope to see you at one retreat next year.

I too have been feeling a bit out of sorts… mainly because this time of year seems to generate expectations that can never be fulfilled. Since I am Christian, I believe deeply in celebrating this season, and I try to bring the meaning back to it in a way that makes sense to me. The kids and I make tons of cookies and take them to the neighbors and the firestations, I host a cookie swap for the ladies in the neighborhood, and I try to make as many gifts as I can (and I shop well ahead of time so I don’t feel overwhelmed). I try to take time off work this season as well — somehow, though, I am always swamped!
We do try to focus on being together as a family and creating a sense of community around us — going to the town carol sing and tree lighting, going to the kids’ holiday parade, taking the little ones to pj’s and slippers storytime at the local children’s bookstore.
It’s tough, I agree — particularly because this season brings back memories of childhood holidays that were not so happy. I do see it as my responsibility to make good memories for my own children, though, so I focus on things through their eyes.
